This was a fun project! The client’s goal was to re-fresh, modernize and elevate the design in their dining room, bathrooms and kid’s bedroom. While the space was tight, we were able to create dramatic results, as you’ll see.
We started with a couple of simple design choices at the entrance, since the 1st impression when entering a home is vital. Next, the dining room is visible immediately upon entering the home, so we made several upgrades that took the space to a new level. The change was dramatic.
The master and guest baths were modernized while the kid’s bedroom was livened up with a mural I designed and painted myself. I also created a comfy feel to the room by adding fun furniture and accessories.
To Color or not to Color
1st Impression
For the outside, we upgraded the light fixtures. I also chose to change the front door from brick red to an elegant satin black.
Dining and Family Room
Mixing Historical Dining Interiors with Modern Design
The idea of a panoramic wall treatment in dining rooms is as old as interior decoration. Whether a Pompeian Banquet Room or the White House’s Reception Room, panoramic murals are stunning additions to a dining room.
Modern
Timeless luxury vinyl tile flooring gave the room warmth while allowing functionality. The owners converted the adjacent family room into a yoga/game room, which needed a soft durable flooring that was easy to maintain.
BEFORE
Dining Room: Carpet Galore
My focus was flooring, wall coverings, window and window treatments as well light fixtures. The home was then furnished by my clients. With a 10′ ceiling, spacial flow, this home had great potential. A little design helped to make it stellar!
Master Bathroom Upgrade
Open Minimalist
This master bathroom’s layout was very tight. The toilet had a challenging location, so I chose to enhance the ceiling and open the space as much as I could. For the space, I added a ceiling texture, curbless shower and freestanding tub. We wanted to keep a modern yet transitional austere interior.
Elegant and Modern
We installed a curbless shower, volcanic tile, a free standing tub and Carrera subway tile. I wanted to bring calm and modernism to this master bath. I emphasized the ceiling which brings openness and a feeling of space, despite its difficult layout.
BEFORE
Back in the 1990s, not to the Future
The window grid and corner tub gave this bathroom its 1990s stamp. The vanity and flooring were in dire need of upgrading. The door reflected in the mirror is where the toilet sat next to the bathroom entrance.
Master Shower – Not for the Faint of Heart!
A far cry from its upgrade above, this shower had an extremely low ceiling and a 24 inch entry door. I felt squeezed in between the shower half wall and toilet upon entering the space. Aged white granite, old porcelain tile covered the room…. Everything had to go.
Guest Bathroom
Faux Shiplap
The challenge here was the very tall ceiling, a narrow bathroom, a dropped ceiling about the tub and no gutting! So, I painted a faux shiplap with a modern tropical style. The vanity and pharmacy cabinet were repainted, a new light fixture and shower curtain… Et voila!

Skillful Photography
The photographer skillfully did not include the ceiling height making this picture look proportionate. The budget was limited on this room, so creativity was paramount.
Kid’s Bedroom
A Room with a New View
I wanted to make this room as timeless as possible. I designed and painted this mountain mural to allow the possibility to grow from a kid’s room to an eventual office. While it was “just paint”, the mural added a serene atmosphere that wasn’t there before!
Staged Kid’s Room
Cabin in the Mountain
The fun bunk bed added a cool, but functional, element to the room. Accessories like the area rug, pillow lounger and pouf ottomans added to the comfy and serene vibe of the room.
